I think the origin was French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint - Exupéry
who, in his popular novella The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince, published in
1943) wrote "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add,
but when there is nothing left to take away." (Actually "La perfection est
atteinte non quand il ne reste rien à ajounter, mais
quand il ne reste rien à enlever.").
