It would be good to have a definition of "variant" that allows us to know the answer. Half the problem with these discussions is that the meaning of variant is so fluid. There are currently two competing definition of Chinese Domain Name, one of which requires them all to have effectively the same DNS data and another of which explicitly intends to use the DNS for application support, with different RDATA for different A-label names (even though the different A-labels are conceptually "the same name"). This basic confusion in terms makes generalizing and standardizing the behaviour of such things rather tricky.
