>> Establishing IETF consensus is more important. > That is not for this mailing list, or covered in this document. If one area establishes a precedent, by consensus or not, it puts pressure on the IETF as a whole. By (presumably) establishing consensus that it is okay, rather than saying what some registries do, yes, you are venturing into those waters; viz. the comments by Eliot. >> We know what SEC does > I disagree with that on a factual basis. In the last year, I have had at least three people express surprise that some Security Area registries allow Internet Drafts as references. Well, without knowing who the people are, and what their involvement is in the IETF, I can't comment. The SAAG list alone, however, has 682 members so one-half of one percent does not seem significant to contract my "we know" :) >> and most people are okay with that > If that's the case, great. We have never done a measurement. This has come up a number of times, and yes, we've never done a consensus call. But there's been only one person who vocally and repeatedly, argues against it. > so I agree this section does not belong. >The whole section? The whole paragraph? Or just the sentence "This method is controversial with some members of the IETF community because drafts were originally designed to be impossible to access six months after publication, and wording based on the assumption of that inaccessibility still appears automatically in current Internet Drafts."? This part: "However, using Internet Drafts as stable references for code points in IANA registries has been allowed for at least 20 years." s/allowed for/done/. And if you have a pointer to the first time it was done to validate that 20 year claim that would be great. I still think removing all guidance and making this a survey of current practice would be quicker and very helpful. _______________________________________________ saag mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected]
