Hi, In particular, there are 3 goals with this pair of drafts: 1) Specify RSVP Authentication in an algorithm-independent and mode-independent manner, while retaining backwards compatibility for operators who have deployed the existing mechanism. This provides long-term flexibility to specify/standardize new cryptographic algorithms (e.g., post-quantum algorithms and their modes) in modes as the IETF deems appropriate. 2) Specify how HMAC-SHA2 is used in combination the above draft. The only currently standardized cryptographic algorithm is MD5, which desperately needs to be moved out of both IETF standards and the operational deployed Internet. 3) By modularizing the specifications in this way, the base specification need not be updated every time a new algorithm or mode is specified. Also, in future at some point, it will be possible for IETF to deprecate the HMAC-SHA2 draft without needing to update or modify the base specification.
