It is a common practice in the SS7 network: one that we intended the specifications to support. There are two (maybe three) common interconnect arrangements in the SS7 network: F-link, A-link and B/D-link. F-link interconnect is handled by IPSP and SG/ASP backhaul. A-link and B/D-link require multiple SG as STP arrangement. A transit network (not just an access network) would also require an SG-SG arrangement for M3UA (or IPSP with relay).
