Last month, the IETF published RFC 8823 which extends the ACME protocol to issue S/MIME certificates. Honestly, by not wasting time with diversions that are unlikely to do anything useful. Pretty much every MUA other than webmail already has S/MIME support. If a few of them let their users get certs with one click, it might make a difference.
