For the past 2 years we've been working on building a better shaping and analytical transparent middlebox software out of rust, c, ebpf, python, etc, principally targeted at the needs of smaller ISPs presently. We have got it to the point where it handles over 25Gbits of traffic through CAKE for 11k subscribers, and of interest to this list, is perhaps both the improved analytics, and the number of ISPs that would like to find researchers interested in various network behaviors. We have successfully duplicated (in real time) the famed "mice and elephants" plots from 2002, as one example. It's FOSS. It runs on ubuntu on a decent Xeon. You can get it here: https://github.com/LibreQoE/LibreQoS/releases/tag/v1.4-rc9 - it is stable enough for over 35 ISPs to be using it in production. You can also just use it at home if you are interested in the analytical side (building on kathie nichols' wonderful pping concept for tcp traffic), on an i5. Sorry, no openwrt or arm support currently. I am especially interested in this coming ietf to learn what else congestion control researchers would like to be able to learn from this vantage point. I have some stats about ECN and diffserv usage in the wild, and netflix vs a vs other forms of video and video conferencing traffic I would like to chat about.
