So, what would you do instead then?

Sell a server or service that doesn't work with several popular clients?

Well, sorry. It seems we live in different worlds then.

If you insist on that ideal world you'll probably never find a fully 
compliant server (not because of MKCOL, but because of the more subtle 
problems I mentioned -- I noticed you didn't follow up on these...).

That's true.

The problem arises when clients use in-band information for the wrong 
purpose; for instance refuse to use PROPFIND, just because OPTIONS 
doesn't return a DAV header.

In reality you need to deal with these kinds of clients, at least if you 
don't have the luxury to tell the customers just to get a different client.
