I'm doing some work for NORID, the registry responsible for the .no
domain. We have plans for storing our "whois"-data in LDAP as well.

If several registries stored their data in LDAP and we could agree
to some degree on schemas things could get very interesting. It
would then be possible to share tools, and it could be possible
for a user to use the same tools for different registries. With
referrals one could also have data in different LDAP servers with-
out the user necessarily knowing it. Some "whois"-implementations
today have chaining which has some of the same effect, but referrals
are better in my opinion.

Currently our registrars are left with the same "whois" interface
as everyone else. With LDAP one could give them access to more
data or more powerful queries once they authenticate.
