What goes on port 43 is a completely different story, and it should
stay that way.

Looking at the dicussion going on about what the function of whois
should or shouldn't be is an example about of this.
But I wonder how big the overlap is really. In the hollenbeck draft
the lookup function of whether an object exists is just a small
portion of the whole draft.
To exagerate a bit, since DNS is does also do lookups, why not add
a whois function to it?
