I quite thought Ethernet collisions were a thing of the past! it certainly never occurred to me that they would give rise to higher layer packet loss - what has this to do with IPv4LL?

Large numbers of packets arriving simultaneously - or just a few in some of the lightweight devices likely to use IPv4LL - can and does cause packets to be dropped. If the same sequence of packets arrives each time then the same ones are likely to be dropped each time.
