Over the last 4 years the Auto ID Center has developed specifications
for the deployment of low cost, standardised RFID based identification
systems for the retail supply chain. As European Research Director for
the center (and now for the Auto ID Lab in Cambridge) the speaker has
been involved in this development and in particular has examined the way
in which real time product information might impact on automated supply
chain operations. This seminar will be in three parts. Firstly a short
background to the Auto ID Center will be provided and the technological
building blocks developed by the center outlined. Secondly, a number of
the key characteristics of RFID collected product data are examined and
the implications for real time automation highlighted. Finally, several
supply chain application examples from the work of the Cambridge Auto ID
Lab are described to illustrate the impact of the availability of RFID
based product information.
