Bad-CD update Sep/Oct 2004

Only one thing really interesting to report.  Someone wrote as follows:

  Avril Lavigne's "Under My Skin" installs a set of ASPI driver files
  dated 1999 with no warning or prompting if the disc is allowed to
  autorun.  When I emailed BMG about this, asking how to restore my
  original files, they were unable to help, but did offer me a
  non-protected copy of the disc - a bit pointless, given that I had
  already ripped it, in spite of the copy protection...

Now, this is illegal under the Computer Misuse Act, isn't it?  Another
person reported that inserting the disc corrupted his Nero
installation.

My main reason for posting this is that Julian asked me to watch out
for this happening.  So, anything we can do with this?  

The release is quite old now (May-2004).  I don't buy any CDs any
more, and I don't have a machine that boots Windows any more either,
so I guess I'm out of touch, but my impression is that newer
rip-blocking discs do at least ask the user.  If they don't ask,
though, that is "computer misuse", isn't it?


Also, "Aero" by Jean Michelle Jarre appears to be either corrupt or
have a bad master, as one person found severe problems extracting
track 15 on two drives, with two different tested copies of the album.
