Copyright on stamps

Hello,

Someone submitted a photo to a Creative Commons arts project I'm working on 
that contained some US postal stamps. We're a bit unsure about the legality 
of this... can anyone suggest an answer or a good place to look? And indeed 
for any helpful strategies in dealing with these kinds of questions?
