Another bad CD?

Oops, sorry. Just checked and as far as I can see,
the holes on both discs are dead centre. I think
Glyn's disc is just from a faulty batch.

BUT...today I've come across the same thing myself, on
a different disc. :( It's The Truth Is No Words CD
single by The Music. I'd be surprised if this really
was off-centre hole protection though - the single was
released in early 2003 by Virgin Records Ltd, and I
can't find any mention of Sony or any others from the
Big Five on the CD or case.

There's a lot of clunking after I insert the disc.
It's another mixed mode disc, and I can copy the PC
files from it with no trouble. On the other hand, I
can't extract audio. Lots and lots of clunking. I
can't seem to get Exact Audio Copy to let me extract
at single speed - it only lets me use 19.9x, for some
reason. I would investigate further but I'm not
willing to try this disc in any other drives.

This certainly seems to be acting in the way I
understand these off-centre hole discs are meant to
act. The user can copy the files without much trouble
but can't extract audio (of course, the clunking when
you insert the disc is presumably destroying the CD
drive, but I don't imagine the record labels consider
this to be a problem).

However, I feel this CD was released before the
subject was ever brought up, right? My memory's not
much good and I'm not very involved with this
campaign, but I'm sure this Sony thing is much more
recent. So, presumably I just have a faulty disc.
Perhaps Sony came up with the idea when someone sent
back a poorly-made disc. :)

So, is my disc badly manufactured or copy-protected?
It's becoming so hard to tell the difference these
days.

Alan
