If I am not mistaken you need
(! system('echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep')) and resume_from_S4();
or
resume_from_S4() unless system('echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep');

since system returns 0 on success.

This will run resume_from_S4() regardless of whether succeeded.
