[ACPI-sppt] how acpid works? Does it fit my needs?

Greetings,

I'm starting with ACPI and I would like if it fits my needs.

I would like to control my computer, to save energy (->turn off
hard-disk) and eventually shutdown. If I write to /proc/acpi/{sleep,*}
and if I have triggered the ACPID event->action, I can override the
default behavior when we write to proc?

For instance, I echo X > /proc/acpi/sleep, my ACPID daemon would catch
the event and process the action in script handler overriding the
default action? I tried to do that but my computer shutdown or reboot!!
And I pretend to capture the event 

Is my script right?

event=.*
action=/etc/acpi/teste.pl

teste.pl (perl script) just write the event to a file, but I didn't
capture anything! My computer shutdown!!

I appreciate any help because I think I haven't got the main workflow of
acpi+acpid.
