[ACPI-sppt] memory problem with ACPI on Dell Dimension 8300 (i875p chipset)

I'm seeing a weird issue on my Dell Dimension 8300, after running an
ACPI-enabled kernel. After rebooting the BIOS thinks that the amount
or memory changed, and halts with the following message:

The amount of system memory has changed.
Alert! OS Install Mode enabled. Amount of available memory limited to 256MB.

This problem does not occur when using an (otherwise identical) kernel
without ACPI enabled. At the moment I'm using 2.4.21, updated with the
20030619 ACPI patch. The following options have been selected:

   ACPI Support (CONFIG_ACPI)
   Processor (CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR)

I've also tried enabling "CPU Enumeration Only" (CONFIG_ACPI_HT_ONLY),
plus the "acpismp=force" kernel parameter, which does not exhibit this
problem. Unfortunately, I haven't been successful in enabling
hyperthreading in this configuration, which is my primary reason for
needing ACPI in the first place.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Are there any workarounds?
Thanx!
