[ACPI-sppt] 2.4.21 acpi on compaq 2140US

I have a Compaq 2140US laptop.  I have been trying to get acpi working
on this machine.  I downloaded the official 2.4.21 sources, and the
latest acpi patch from the sourceforge page.  After patching the kernel
and recompiling, my system hangs after the lines:

            PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfd87b, last bus=2

            PCI: Using configuration type 1

Using the same .config file, I can compile the unpatched kernel and boot
it just fine. Has anyone seen this issue, or have any idea what could be
causing it?  Thanks.
