[ACPI-sppt] Asus M3N / ACPI overload

I'm having trouble getting a kernel to run ACPI with my Asus M3N.
I've used the patches available on acpi.sf.net.
With each I've tried, the machine grinds away slowly as kacpippid(2.4.19),
keventd(2.4.20 or 2.4.21 or 2.4.22), and event0 in 2.5.72, consume most
of the processor cycles. I've tried commenting a line I'd read about
online in the source of events/evrgnini.c but that trick doesn't seem to
change things on this machine. Anyhow, just thought I'd throw out a line
and see if anyone had some advice. I always compile ACPI in, not as a
module, and leave APM out. Incidentally, with APM compiled into the kernel,
the fans only come on slowly and irregularly, there is no battery
information, and suspend works. Dunno if any of these are "clues".
