ACPI allows you to schedule things to happen when physical events are
triggered (pressing certain buttons, adding or removing ac power,
closing the lid, &c.)

It also allows IRQ routing to work on ACPI-only laptops (most laptops
built in the last year or two). This is handy if you want to use all the
hardware.
