I don't think it's a problem as general as you describe it. What processor do you have? Maybe something accidentally activated one of the downscaling features (SpeedStep, etc.). Check /proc/acpi/processor/*/*. That may also be thermo related, some laptop BIOSes scale the processor speed down based on some configurable step levels. Maybe something got mixed up there when ACPI was activated in the kernel. Try to run "top" to see if your processor is actually doing something else while playing, if it's just waiting or running at 100%. Run "dmesg" to see if there are any ACPI related errors. Try "hdparm" to check if DMA is activated (you installed a new kernel, so maybe you forgot to compile that in).
