if that is a 2.[56] kernel, be sure to have CONFIG_VT CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE etc.
enabled...

Perhaps.  But another table (called FADT) is more usefull.
Can you at first:
1/ give what kind of kernel, with what kind of patch(s)?
2/ for the one you can boot from, can you:

cat /proc/acpi/processor/*/info

If you didnt see
power management:      yes

then can you give output of (full) dmesg and DSDT and FADT tables via
something like that:

wget http://developer.intel.com/technology/iapc/acpi/downloads/pmtools-20010730.tar.gz
tar xzvfp pmtools-20010730.tar.gz
cd pmtools-20010730/acpidmp
make
sudo ./acpidmp DSDT > dsdt
sudo ./acpidmp FACP > fadt
tar xzvf acpi_tables.tar.gz dsdt fadt

then mail me (privately) acpi_tables.tar.gz
