I don't know which player you are using and I don't have that problem, neither with xmms, mpg123 nor with ogg123.
But check /proc/acpi/processor/*/performance to see if your processor clock is slowed down (P1) when switching from AC to battery. If so, try "echo 0 > performance" and check if the playback speed changes.
If that works, I guess there's a script somewhere in /etc that is called on ACPI events ("acpi_proxy" ?). Check where your system is configured to change the processor speed (/etc/sysconfig ?) and try disabling it. But note that this can noticibly shorten battery run time...
