How does one fsck a dd image of a filesystem?

Going nuts trying to find an answer to this one.
I can't seem to find a way to fsck a dd image file of a filesystem.

"file" is reporting the file as an unclean/mounted filesystem image.
I can mount the partition (which I did read-only) on a loop device.
But e2fsck won't check it -- it expects the target to be a device node.

How does one do this then? Thanx.
