Finally got the chance to really get into this and take a look at all the 
different solutions people offered.  Here's what worked best for me:

Use RedHat 9.  During the install process, tell it that you are using 
Kerberos authentication and put in all of the appropriate server 
information.  Install imap, postfix, apache, and squirrelmail (and anything 
else you want).

I found that I had to go into services and specifically turn on the services.

After that, it's as simple as typing "useradd username" at the command 
prompt and letting the kerberos servers handle the authentication.  You can 
edit passwd to set the shell to /dev/null, but that may have conflicts with 
some of the squirrelmail plugins.  I haven't tested that far yet.
