Tape drive errors

Hi, 

I guess I assumed, incorrectly, that the problem was
the fact that I was tar'ing over the network.  If,
from /, I do a tar cvf /dev/st0 . on the box with the
tape drive, these messages are logged to syslog:

: st0: Error with sense data: Info fld=0x1, Current
st09:00: sense key Medium Error
kernel: Additional sense indicates Write error
kernel: st0: Error on write filemark.

Again this is a brand new PowerVault V110T (DLT-4) in
a Dell PowerEdge2600 server.  I know others are using
these with Linux (searched google, plus Dell supports
Red Hat, although I'm using Debian).  I've also tried
two tapes.

Any ideas?  Is the drive defective?
