For the first situation (two cards in one box), You could write a script
that would ping a reliable box on your network, and if the ping ever doesn't
respond, you could 'ifconfig eth0 down' and 'ifconfig eth1 up' to bring down
the first interface and bring up the second (assuming eth0/1 are your
interface names).

The other situation (with two servers and one IP) is what I believed LVM
(Linux Virtual Machine) was created for. I think it will take care of the
situation.  Another situation in this case would be to just use MX records
in DNS, with the main mail server given a higher priority than the second
one. I don't think you have to try to cluster the mail servers, try the MX
records.

SUMMARY

    In effect Linux-ha was the solution I tested and it worked out fine. Now I
have implement it soon
For the part of my search I think I couldn't give in write words for googling
resulting in irrelevant results.

The part of second nic taking over is still not complete since I am new to
scripting world and It might take
me sometime before I actually am able to implement to script

          I have got stuch up with a problem on which even after searching

for days. I couldn't get any solutions.

The Description:
            I have a mail server running quite a number of packages with
virtual domain.
Besides me there is no one in my organisation to troubleshoot it. Sice it
will
be going
live, I have created a hot back up of the system which synchronises itself
with the
main server after a stipulated period of time.

The Problems:
1.    My main server has a redundant card which I have configured with the
same IP but
which does not start on boot. I would like to find a way to activate the card
as soon as
the first card stops responding.
2.    Since 2 cards are configured with the same IP in case of server failure
I would like that
the hotbackup automatically configures itself with the same IP and starts
responding
