localhost DNS issue

Hello,

I have a server that runs both mail (Exim) and DNS (Bind), that
has been working great for years.

However, today it seems that Exim, ping, pretty much and local
userland application except host, dig and nslookup, cannot resolve
external hosts ("host not found" errors).

I checked that my /etc/nsswitch.conf is correct, and if I set
a secondary DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf it works fine!

The DNS server running on localhost serves up a bunch of external
domains, and seems fine from the outside (e.g. I can do:

host yahoo.com server

>From both outside and inside, and it all works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob Helmer
