Thanks for everyones suggestions, but especially to Mike Brodbelt who
had a similar problem with XFS, and had the fix.  It turns out that on a
default ext2/3 install the fstab has options that are not correct for
anything other than ext2/3.  In this case, since I started with ext3,
the option "errors=remount-ro" was in the options line.  When the system
was booting up, ReiserFS saw that option, didn't like it, and mounted
itself ro.  Removing that option, and leaving only the defaults option,
fixed everything.  On previous installations I had started with ReiserFS
so the issue never came up.
