Thanks to Martin Hepworth, Michael Hinz and Mike Kercher  for their
replies.

It seems that scanning both incoming and outgoing mail for spam was
the problem.  Disabling spamfiltering on the outbound mail, normalised
the load on the machine.

Martin suggested that I use surbl.org's version of bigevil.cf.  I will
try that out at a later stage.
