Print spooling for Windows clients

The objective is to provide Linux-based print spooling for a couple of
labs with various MS Windows clients - 98 now, moving to XP later (in
the case of the older lab, perhaps quite a lot later, since P2/233s
aren't a good match for XP, and budget is thin of late).  I've used
both lpr[ng] and CUPS (meaning IPP protcol) on a smaller scale, and the
'98 clients can probably work with either.  CUPS has much the nicer
interface for less technical staff, which is nice as it gets me off the
hook as the only one who can clear a logjam, but despite the GUIlike
web interface (or because of it?) I don't feel as comfortable with CUPS
as a production solution, whereas I've used lprNG in that setting
before.  The usual Unix spooler concerns with "magical" filtering is
pretty unimportant here: the printers all speak postscript, and
everything is configured to produce it.  It's a pretty open
environment, so quotas and accounting aren't big concerns... but
something that put jobs over X pages long on hold would be handy.

So I'd like to hear from folks with experience spooling for thirty or
more Windows clients: what worked well for you?  What didn't?  Did one
protocol or the other make the client-side happier?
