Authentication systems

Hello,
I am looking into setting up some sort of authentication system. The
clients are a mix of
XP and 2000, with a few developer systems on Linux. Much of the
authentication would be
for remote (linux) servers being access by local users (on windows). So
far using Samba
as a domain controller has been the focus of my research. But I've also
recently started
to look at using an active directory server to do it.  I was wondering
if anyone can point
me to some documentation that compares the two, or some case studies of
implementation.
