Well no interaction with the desktop (kde) was possible. You could see
the mouse pointer but it was not possible to click on any button.
Keyboard was dead, too.
Had to hard reset the machine.

That's informative and reassuring to hear such a system crash was not
caused by ALSA.
Then it is probably a hardware failure. Maybe RAM.
