VLC and libavcodec !?

Hi, I'm really new with linux and I've a prob getting divx running with
totemplayer cause I didnt found a plugin. so I decided to use VLC
but I cant start it cause libavcodec.so is not the correct one I think.
VLC uses the symlink of libavcodec.so.51 but that won't work on my
machine. then I tried to redirect the symlink to so.52 , but that
also only works with normal mpeg and audio mp3-codec, all other
codecs arenot available, what can I do to get it running ?
