Summary: DMA Error with ATAPI CDROM
Product: Ark Linux
Version: 1.0 alpha7
Platform: i586 (PC, Intel)
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: Low
Affects: Overall Usability
Component: syslinux
AssignedTo: [email protected]
ReportedBy: [email protected]
QAContact: [email protected]
Description of Problem:
When attempting to install, during the kernel boot the installer hangs when it
tries to detect "hdb" or the CDROM drive from which ark is installing. I get
errors like "hdb: timeout wating for DMA", "hdb: DMA disabled", "hdb: command
error." These errors will continually loop and the install process is
basically hung. This is all before I get to the "installation type" screen.
I have attempted booting with the ide=nodma parameter per Bero's instructions
but this did not fix the problem. The problem-drive is an Acer 16x10x40 CD-RW.
I do not have this problem in alpha 6.
My friend, who has a Compaq Presario 1500T laptop, experiences the same
problem. His install hangs when it is searching for his DVD/CD-RW combo
drive. The only difference is his errors start with "cdrom_read_error" and
his drive is hdc.

Happens every time myself or my friend attempt to install alpha 7.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot with Ark alpha 7 cd.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Booting of kernel for the first time hangs.
Expected Results:
Should detect drive and continue with installation as it does in alpha 6.
