          Platform: i586 (PC, Intel)
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Enhancement
           Affects: Overall Usability
         Component: Installer

We are currently developing a new installer for Ark Linux. The following is a
list of our current plans for it. After reviewing these plans, feel free to
post possible revisions to plans, or point out possible features we have left
out. PLEASE go to the mailing list with your suggestions before bringing them
here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modifications to the existing install method(s):

- System Install: modified to allow choice of target disk(s) along with a
warning message stating that this procedure will wipe ALL data from the
  selected disk(s).
- Parallel Install: modified to allow choice of target disk(s), plus resizing
of existing partitions to create space for new linux partitions. Will
support resizing of - fat32, ntfs, ext2, ext3 and xfs. Also will allow
  selection of pre-existing linux partitions.
- Express Install: not modified. Currently works as expected.
- Upgrade: Added - upgrade an existing install of Ark Linux
- Advanced Install: Added - features still in progress. Projected features are
as follows: Selection of target disk(s), manual creation of partition(s),
likely with suggestions for target partition sizes. POSSIBLY: allow choice
of filesystem type (ext3/reiserfs). POSSIBLY allow preconfiguration of
networking. POSSIBLY allow preconfiguration of whether to use the standard
ark autologin procedure, or whether to force default KDE login procedure.
This would also come with creation of new user accounts. (NOTE: This concept
runs completely contrary to much of the work done in previous versions of
Ark Linux, and is completely unnecessary if the end user were to take the
time to understand what is done, how, and why.)

All of the above functionality will exist in both a GUI (framebuffer)
installer, as well as a curses based Text installer. We are also discussing
offering network based installs.. but all in good time.

When considering a suggested feature, ask yourself: Is this something that
really BELONGS in the install process, or would it be better suited as a
post-intall configuration? Many things are not NECESSARY for the install
process, and would only complicate matters for people new to Linux.
