switch to a virtual console

How Reproducible:logout from kde for shutdown or restart or switch to a
virtual console with Ctrl+Alt+Fx
Steps to Reproduce:

Actual Results: system hang, only uplugging the power cord helps
Expected Results: system shutdown, restart, or getting to a virtual console
Additional Information:
It does not happen always, only at about 20 - 30 % of cases. Video chipset is
S3Trio3D.
