Hmmm, I must say, that is quite odd.

My laptop, Compaq Presario 900, works very well with Ark Linux, and its specs
are very comparable to yours.  Perchance, have you checked your BIOS, and made
sure that Legacy USB support was not enabled?  It often says to do so for UNIX
operating systems, which is misleading as Linux has advanced further than UNIX
in terms of USB support and selecting that option has been deprecated and is now
disapproved of.

That's about the only thing I can suggest ATM.  I suppose if that doesn't work,
you can try booting with the options "linux nomce nousb acpi=off nopcmcia" at
the "boot:" screen.  Please keep in touch.
