This problem has been resolved.

I did try the apt-get commands, however, I had tried the GUI manager Synaptic
beforehand. When it indicated 450MBytes (3 hours) download, I tried to abort but
I don't think it closed down properly - so apt-get was confused and didn't
download any further updates.

I am trying out different distros on my laptop and placed Fedora on it, found
similar problems. I put ark-linux back, but this time immediately tried apt-get
and left it running overnight.

It timed out on the connection, so I tried again, this time it upgraded a whole
set of components and now I can see my DWL-650 card listed as a network adapter,
and it configured it correctly. I tried rebooting to make sure.

So updating fixed the problem, thanks!
