Just an additional FYI, now that I learned this same thing the hard way, 
killing 4 cdrom drives in the process. (from a bunch corporate donation pc's 
that are going to charity)

On an IBM 300GL (P2-400), most of the 6287-series machines are equipped with an 
LG CDR-8322B CDROM drive (firmware 1.07) that uses the non-standard ATAPI 
implmentation.  Installing Arklinux 10 Alpha causes their firmware to be 
wiped.  I noticed a similar notation on this issue in a post regarding Mandrake 
9.2

Once this CDROM has been wiped, I think its dead - at least I haven't been able 
to reload updated firmware to the unit. The drive does not power up nor is it 
recognized by the BIOS at bootup.  

Has anyone been able to revive one of these flushed LG drives? If so, please 
post here how it was done - I have not been able to run the firmware flash 
utility successfully on a dead drive, though it works with a working drive that 
was detected by bios & the boot disk. 

Also note that the firmware updates available from LG (latest version 1.12) 
appears to be designed for retail versions of the drive, and warns against 
installing it in an OEM version of the drive.

Was this issue posted in any kind of 'readme' file I could have looked at prior 
to installing? If not, can it be added - might save others some grief to warn 
them to check their CDROM type and update the firmware BEFORE attempting an 
installation.  Then again, you learn better by doing... ;)
