I've been meaning to post about this for a bit. First, before anyone gets up
in a bother about the state of Gtk+ applications, etc... hear me out.

We must admit now that we are nearing 1.0 for Ark. This means that we are
nearing a stability point for users and developers as a platform. Once the
beta status is placed on the tree we have an unspoken agreement that the
dockyard and dockyard-devel trees will go in to "soft" freeze. This is no
different than that of KDE's CVS tree getting placed in initial freeze. At RC
1 the thought is the tree would go in to deep freeze, where only software can
be updated to fix showstopper bugs.

Now, as the maintainer of GNOME and the various core glib / gtk+ libraries,
I've been lax. Mostly due to a stressful job that keeps eating up my time and
paying me with meagre wages. However, I need to put my foot down now before
soft freeze occurs. My plan for 1.0 was to have all of the relevant packages
for GNOME and Gtk+ compatibility up to 2.6.2 platform release. Unfortunately,
I had not discussed this with others on the team, and as such, we are already
passed 2.6.2 platform with gtk+ being at 2.4.4 instead of 2.4.3.

I know that Gtk+ and GNOME isn't a major concern to some of the team members,
however, I really did NOT want to have to raise the bar of platform release,
but now I do. To be correct, we'd need to be on development platform release
2.7.4 to be using the version of Gtk+ in our tree. This has placed a larger
task on my shoulders now.

I guess what it comes to is this: when it comes to updating GNOME and Gtk+
platform libs and such, please discuss it with me first. Also, I am freezing
Gtk+ at 2.4.4 and the package versions of the core GNOME libs at 2.6.2
platform release. If you are planning on helping me get us up to date for
GNOME, use only the packages found on the public ftp server for GNOME.
Thanks.
