As I work on teh post installer, I've noted a few problems with our LAN/DSL/ISDN/MODEM config apps. The first niticable issue that I have noted is the inconsistancy of UI. The various config tools range from straight qt, to qt with hardcoded colors (a big no-no in the KDE HIG), and KDE integrated apps that use the root users style information. Coupled with the unprofessional look and feel of a few of the tools, marks a point against them in their present form. The remaining issues are with the various apps themselves. First, the LAN configuration tool. The UI for this one is a mess. No discoverability, and far too many popups make using it for a n00b user both difficult and distracting. I know it is aimed to be a kcm, but it still needs attention. Second, the DSL config tool is missing documentation and has the unneeded about tab page that really should have attribution put in the docs not the UI in the case of a wizard style UI. Third, the ISDN config tool is tied to the ark internet config tool wizard. This needs to be a seperate application for it to be used by the post installer. Fourth, the MODEM config tool is nothing more than kppp. While I cannot begrudge the reuse of a perfectly good app, why can't we call the configuration portion only and not load the entire kppp app. Finally, the ark-internet-config wizard interface does not honour the set qt or root theme at all. I've tried a number of things to see if I could force it, to no avail. We need volunteers to look these over, pronto. I cannot use them in their current state, or we'll have a UGLY as hell first impression with the new user. If no one makes the changes, I will be forced to write new UI's from scratch to do what they do, but directly in the post installer. -- Gary L.
