Hi,
I've just taken a look at the new KOffice beta -- and I've been rather
impressed with its latest addition, Krita (image manipulation program).

This might be the GIMP killer we've been waiting for; actually I'm wondering
if we should dare replacing gimp with krita in the next release (keeping gimp
around on the Extra Software CD (where Krita currently is) of course).

Advantages:
- Its UI requires much less getting used to (the look and feel is much more
  "standard")
- Layers can be moved by inputting coordinates, reducing the need for
  mouse acrobatics to align objects
- Can paint using filters (see e.g. the demo video at
http://home.no.net/~oyvinsat/var/krita2.mpeg)
- Can import gimp pens, brushes etc., so we're backwards compatible
- It's a KDE application, therefore
  - it integrates better with the rest of the system
  - we can move a slew of deprecated libraries off the main CD, making room
    for more important things
  - we can modify it to suit our needs much better
  - it's will progress faster than gimp because ppl can actually work on
features instead of working around the bad API of their toolkit of choice

Disadvantages:
- gimp is pretty much the standard ATM, so people who have used Linux before
  are likely to miss it
- gimp's filters are currently better (but Krita is catching up)
- Some things (e.g. moving an object on a huge pixmap) appear to be slower

Now I'm not exactly a graphics person (actually I suck at graphics almost as
much as M$ sucks at making operating systems, many people can't even
recognize the abstract art that happens to be my handwriting), so I'd like to
hear the opinions of people who actually use graphics apps...
