How to disable GRUB in Ark

I couldn't resist the temptation of installing another Linux distro which I
could use while Ark progresses towards being more stable, right now I find it
difficult to do much of anything with my hardware support the way it is but
I'm hoping that will improve as time passes.
Anyway the other distribution I'm using is Mandrake Linux 10.0 (anyone else
notice their prices jump btw? now Windows is probably cheaper! :-( ) I went
to a lot of trouble to get a working entry for Ark Linux in the lilo menu but
I managed it by copying over the files /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-3arksmp.img
and /boot/initrd-2.6.9-3arksmp.img. I am however concerned that ark will mess
up my lilo setup next time there is a kernel update that will instruct it to
update its grub?
Is there some way to have Ark not run /usr/sbin/lilo after a kernel update but
still have it write the updated information to /boot/grub/grub.conf so I can
copy over the necessary information to mandrake's lilo when there is a new
kernel update.
BTW. I'm experiencing some odd quirks with Ark after proceeding with the
Mandrake installation, I'm a little concerned that I'll mess up either my ark
partition or my mandrake partition seeing as thats what happened last time I
dual booted two distributions. If someone could go over the lines I added
to /etc/lilo.conf in Mandrake and tell me whether I did something wrong or
not I would appreciate that, the important lines from /etc/lilo.conf are:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
default="linux-smp"
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
. .
#next entry for ark linux, created by Nathan, may not work
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-3arksmp
label="arklinux"
root=/dev/hda3
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.9-3arksmp.img
append="splash-silent"
read-only
. .
Thanks.
