How did you try to configure it? Kcontrol? That worked here for a Laserjet 
2250 (not exactly the same, but similar enough...).
Do you get anything else if you try to configure it using cups directly (try 
pointing konqueror at http://localhost:631)?

This is weird, we never included ghostscript (we do include espgs which 
provides ghostscript though), and espgs is there...
Installing hpijs doesn't obsolete either ghostscript or espgs, so I don't see 
how installing/updating hpijs could have any effect on this at all.
Do you get any errors if you "apt-get install espgs hpijs"?
