Well, from memory it said something about magic numbers.  So since it couldn't verify that it was valid metadata it wouldn't back it up, and thus wouldn't erase it.  It would be nice to be able to erase metadata that it doesn't think is valid, but detects as bad (a force anyway option).  After I partitioned the drive and created filesystems the metadata went away, so no I can't provide a test case, but it was pdc metadata.
