The API 550a that I have 4 of because it sounds that good, is three band
and was used on the Fleetwood Mac Rumours API console as the 550b with 4
bands wasn't released yet until the 80's ... I also have the API 5500 which
is the 550b in stereo.

The advantage of API eq is it has "proportional Q" that is gain controlled,
and is one of the reasons it sounds good even with big 12db boosts.

EQ can be described as filters however EQ with dedicated and sweepable
analog LPF/HPF is a huge plus to me and the Speck 4 band eqf 810 along with
its adjustable Q has it all albeit it's much more transparent than API.

My other analog eq to complete 8 channels in my workflow. is the 4 band
Chandler little devil eq that is influenced in design by the inductors in
the Neve 1081.

4 bands of parametric analog eq is about the extent of its evolution in the
mainstream.
