In case you are using the headphone out of your laptop to send signals
to your external speakers it might be that this internal soundcard of
your laptop gets switched off, or into a low-power consumption mode.
This might (might!) cause the buzz and the pop. You might want to try a
small external usb sound card instead, or use jackd to constantly access
that card and keep it busy this way.
