Don't good audio programs like Ardour (and Audacity) handle those things 
without the user having to know about them?

As for Linux audio use, I don't know or care much about the numbers but 
as a regular Mixbus and Ardour user and lurker/occasional poster on both 
their forums I get the impression that both work better on Linux than on 
Win/Mac.
